This Sunday's worship will include a continuation of our Advent station worship (Eucharist, labyrinth, and Tile project) and a very special addition - we will be ordaining Wade. This is real privilege to publicly affirm Wade's role in our community.

Wade came to us three years ago officially as an "Artist-in-Residence" with the responsibilities of art/music in our worship gatherings, missional friendship with local artists, and other specific contributions to creativity in our community. Over time, though, Wade joined our leadership team, became an integral member of our staff team (when this team formed), took the lead in producing our podcast, and eagerly took on pastoral roles in the community outside his specific realm. Sunday will provide us with space to affirm this growth in Wade's role and leadership.

For those of you who do not know Wade's bio...

Wade is a Stanford grad who somehow eluded the family business (football! :) dedicating much of his time to his development as a musician. After his college days, he was integral in starting a campus ministry at Stanford that thrives to this day. He also was on the campus ministry staff at Menlo Park Presbyterian Church. But, Wade's primary vocation over the next decade was writing music and touring with his band, the Basics. The Basics produced a number of successful CD's during this time and developed quite a following-particularly in the San Francisco to Seattle orbit. After that time, Wade moved to Durham and founded "Second Story Studios" and over this last decade has dedicated much of his artistic energy to producing "records" and working with local artists. Wade is still writing music. His Lenten project, "Silence" and last year's "Jesus Prayer," a beautiful musical interpretation of the historic Jesus Prayer, are both on our web site.

The ordination conversation will also provide an excellent opportunity to overview the role of leadership in our community. In many ways, every community member at Emmaus Way is "ordained" (hence our calling our ritual of belonging "the Minister's Liturgy"). This conversation will offer some space to discuss the role of pastoral leadership at EW.

Emmaus Way has a rich (albeit short :) tradition of following the liturgical calendar throughout the year and specifically beginning this journey with Advent. Advent at Emmaus Way is highly participatory, offers opportunity for contemplation, includes missional expression within the gathering, and embraces a highly festive tone. Part of this tradition is accomplished through the use of worship stations, which this year includes a Eucharist of sweet wine, juice, breads, and cheeses; an altar tile project; and a prayer labyrinth.

This week's lectionary texts are:

  • Isaiah 40:1-11
  • Mark 1:1-8
  • 2 Peter 3:8-15
  • Psalm 85

This year we will also introduce a storytelling element to our worship. Lara Chase is preparing a study/meditation sheet each week for the lectionary texts. Sarah Shallcross will be leading this week's dialogue focusing on Psalm 85 and the Isaiah text.
